John Duval: A winemaker's winemaker

John Duval stands among the most influential figures in Australian wine—a quiet force whose craftsmanship has shaped global perceptions of Barossa Shiraz. His reputation as a “winemaker’s winemaker” reflects not just skill, but a lifetime devoted to elevating old‑vine fruit into wines of depth, elegance, and longevity. For over five decades, his stewardship of the Barossa Valley’s old vines has defined a legacy of structural elegance and global prestige.

The Penfolds Era: Custodian of a Legend

Duval’s storied career began in 1974 at Penfolds, where he served a 12-year apprenticeship under the mentorship of Max Schubert, the legendary creator of Grange. In 1986, Duval was appointed Chief Winemaker—becoming only the third person in the company’s history to hold the title.

This period cemented Duval’s philosophy: respect for heritage vineyards, meticulous blending, and an unwavering commitment to structure and age‑worthiness.

For 16 years, Duval was the custodian of Grange, overseeing iconic releases such as the 1990 vintage, which Wine Spectator named its "Wine of the Year" in 1995. Yet, Duval was an innovator as much as a guardian. He modernized the Penfolds portfolio by developing the RWT Shiraz (introducing French oak to premium Barossa Shiraz), the Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon, and the flagship white, Yattarna.

John Duval Wines: A Personal Legacy

In 2003, Duval left the corporate sphere to establish John Duval Wines, a boutique family project that allowed him to return to hands-on winemaking. His philosophy was distinct: to craft wines that expressed the best of the Barossa’s ancient vineyards with a focus on balance and texture rather than sheer power.

His debut release, Plexus (a Shiraz, Grenache, and Mourvèdre blend), was an instant critical success, proving that "GSM" blends could sit at the premium table. This was followed by Entity, a Shiraz that captures the region's generosity without the heaviness, and his flagship Eligo, a selection of the very best Shiraz parcels that rivals the country's top reds.

Current Success and Releases

Today, Duval works alongside his son, Tim Duval, ensuring the brand remains a multi-generational legacy. His current releases continue to receive high praise for their longevity and "savory" complexity.

  • Eligo Shiraz: Recent vintages (such as the 2021) have scored in the mid-to-high 90s, praised for their "iron fist in a velvet glove" structure.

  • Integro: A super-premium Cabernet-Shiraz blend that pays homage to the classic Australian style Duval helped perfect during his Penfolds days.

  • Sequel Syrah: Internationally, he continues to craft this highly rated wine for Long Shadows in Washington State, showcasing his mastery of Syrah across continents.

John Duval’s impact is immeasurable; he bridged the gap between traditional Australian robustness and modern finesse, proving that Barossa wine can be as intellectual as it is powerful. Using grapes from some of the oldest vineyards in the Barossa, John handcrafts elegant, exceptional wines with a focus on classic reds.

We had the absolute pleasure of tasting with Jon and his son, Tim, a couple of years back at Artisans of the Barossa. What an absolute mega bloke, and the future with Tim looks very bright.

“The Barossa has, we believe, the oldest Shiraz Grenache Mataro vineyards in the world,” says John. “It’s a great honour to be working with those grape-growing families.”

Now John is passing his knowledge down to his eldest son, Tim, who joined the business in 2016.

“I’ve played my role in Penfolds, so I’m assuming that history will treat me kindly,” says John. “But having a premium Barossa brand is important to me. Handing over the responsibility to my son and seeing the reputation continue under a new generation, I think, is going to give me a big thrill.”

Today, as John passes the torch to his son Tim, the Duval legacy is entering a new chapter—one rooted in tradition yet open to evolution. Their shared commitment to Barossa’s ancient vineyards ensures that the region’s story will continue to be told through wines of integrity, elegance, and unmistakable character. We look forward to tasting their future vintages.

Thank you to Jon and Tim for taking the time to share their beautiful wines and their valuable time with a couple of punters, and to Artisans of the Barossa for hosting us.

Happy Tasting Adventures,

Cheers,
