Relaxed Weekend in Westside Paso Robles

  • Apr 5
  • 3 min read

To make this a truly "relaxed" weekend, the itinerary will focus on no more than three wineries per day, grouped geographically to minimize driving on the winding Westside roads.

Here is a proposed 2-Day Relaxed Itinerary for your Paso Robles trip, centered on the six excellent wineries we mentioned in our last article.

The six wineries we selected are all located in the hills of Westside Paso Robles, famous for its limestone soils and high-quality, often Rhône-style, wines. Reservations are mandatory for all these high-demand estates, especially on weekends.

Arrive & Dinner Downtown

Check into your accommodation near Downtown Paso Robles. Enjoy a leisurely dinner at a local spot.

Day 1: Saturday

10:30 AM

Adelaida Road Area: Start with the Rhône pioneers. Tablas Creek offers a relaxed, educational setting. The tasting room is cozy, and they often have a comprehensive flight of their whites, rosés, and reds.

12:30 PM

Adelaida Road Area (Nearby): Brecon is known for its friendly, unpretentious atmosphere and small-batch production. Enjoy a tasting and relax with a picnic lunch (bring your own or pre-order) on their deck overlooking the vineyards.

3:00 PM

Winding Way Area: Conclude the day at this stunning, modern winery with sweeping views. The focus is on complex Rhône blends. The experience is intimate and seated, allowing you to settle in and savor the high-elevation wines.

Evening

Rest & Casual Dinner

Relax back at your hotel or accommodation. For dinner, try a great pizza place or a casual barbecue spot to contrast with the day's sophisticated wines. Or perhaps a nice restaurant like Buona Tavola

Day 2: Sunday

10:00 AM

Templeton/46 West Area: Start with a bold experience at L'Aventure, famous for its "Paso Blends" of Syrah and Cabernet. The setting is refined, but the wines are compelling. Book the private Library Experience if available for an exclusive, slower pace. Have some lunch before the next stop.

12:30 PM

Vineyard Drive Area: Head to this beautiful, family-owned winery for a refined, personal tasting. They often feature an intimate, seated experience (sometimes private), which feels very special and unhurried.

2:30 PM

Vineyard Drive Area (Nearby): Finish your weekend at this smaller, boutique winery. The focus here is often on the quality of the specific vineyard block. The experience is typically relaxed and hands-on, perfect for a final, focused tasting before heading home.

Tips for a Relaxed Pace

  1. Book All Tastings: Reservations are essential for these wineries, ensuring you have a dedicated spot and don't feel rushed.

  2. Allow Travel Time: Even though they are grouped, the roads on the Westside are curvy. Allow 30-45 minutes between reservations to account for winding roads and relaxed transitions.

  3. Hydrate & Snack: Drink plenty of water between each stop, and use your lunch break at Brecon Estate to have a proper meal. A relaxed itinerary is a safe itinerary!

  4. Have a Designated Driver: Use a professional car service; there are many great companies in the area, or designate a non-drinking driver. This is the single most important factor for a truly relaxed experience.

There are literally hundreds of wonderful wineries and tasting rooms to visit while in Paso Robles; these are just the tip of the iceberg. Along with great restaurants, downtown has enough tasting rooms for many days of happy tasting. Just south of Paso Robles is another great spot for food and wine called Tin City.

The perfect size of a tasting group is two to six people. Any more is like herding cats.

So get yourself a driving service or a designated driver and go enjoy one of the world's great wine regions!

Happy Tasting Adventures,

Cheers,
