Montague Estate, Margaret River

Nestled along prestigious Tom Cullity Drive in the heart of Western Australia's Wilyabrup Valley lies Montague Estate (montagueestate.com.au), a gem among Margaret River's boutique producers. Surrounded by legendary neighbors such as Vasse Felix, Moss Wood, and Cullen, Montague Estate occupies a 45-hectare parcel of undulating terrain with deep winemaking roots.

First planted in 1988, the vineyard carries decades of agricultural care, having previously operated under the banners of Arlewood and Heydon Estate before entering a vibrant new chapter as Montague Estate in 2020. Montague has established itself as a premier producer of small-release, delicately hand-crafted wines.

The distinct personality of Montague Estate wines is tied directly to its maritime climate and diverse soil composition. Vine roots stretch across capes of laterite rock, ironstone gravel, clay, and sand. This varied geology, combined with cooling breezes from the nearby Indian Ocean, yields fruit with striking aromatic intensity, crisp natural acidity, and refined structural depth. In short, Wilyabrup features the quintessential maritime-influenced, temperature-controlled climate for the vineyards to thrive in.
Rather than producing mass-market releases, the team at Montague focuses on low-yield, small-batch vinification that allows each block to express its microclimate.

To retain the integrity of their estate-grown fruit, hand-picking and gentle processing are standard practice. Red ferments undergo hand-plunging in open fermenters before maturing in carefully selected French oak barriques and hogsheads. The result is a suite of wines defined not by heavy extraction, but by grace, balance, and regional authenticity.
We arrived at 4 pm on a cool, wet midweek afternoon. There was another small group just leaving, and so we were left as the only customers. Let the tasting and conversation begin.

One of the first things we noticed was the beautiful, elegant labels of each wine bottle put out and that there was a theme. Using the family heraldry, a color-coded label system featuring the family Griffin prominently symbolizing strength, legacy, and lineage, these labels are very attractive.
As we tasted through what was almost the entire range, one thing that stood out was the consistent elegance that was present in all these wines. Some were light on the palate, and some were bold and heavier, but all had a lovely refinement and beautiful balance.

As we tasted the wines and engaged in vigorous discussions about all things wine-related, the time had gotten away with us all. I think Monty the Border Collie had had enough wine yammering for what had turned into evening and also wanted some dinner. It’s amazing how times flies when good wine and conversation are happening.

We always like to purchase a bottle or two from a producer we enjoy, but this time selecting was almost impossible as we truly enjoyed all of the wines poured.
We did manage, of course! Look for a future review.
Whether visiting their cellar door off Tom Cullity Drive or ordering direct from montagueestate.com.au, fellow wine lovers, get yourself there and you will discover a boutique operation where quality takes precedence over quantity. Enjoy 🍷
Happy Tasting Adventures,
Cheers,
